Revisiting My Grandma's Quilt - The Ribbon and Borders
The Border
The next to last step is the border and it was the easiest!
I used the same colour Perle 8 that is called for in the pattern on the 24 count congress cloth and it’s perfect!
I went to a Perle 5 for the mono canvas - same colour as what’s called for in the pattern. And again - perfect!
There is great coverage on both fabrics and it looks just amazing!
It does look a little disjointed having the “floating borders” as I didn’t stitch the corners but for testing purposes I’m ok with the look.
For interest, I have shown the entirety of both of my test canvases. They actually look quite nice!!
Below is the original sample stitched on 28 count Jobelan (with perle #8).
The Ribbon
I really like how the ribbon crimps just a wee bit at the intersections where it is stitched down.
The 7 mm ribbon on the mono canvas is just a little to wide. The 5 mm is maybe just a little narrow. If you’ve heard of 6 mm ribbon let me know! Regardless, I like them both and the 7mm gathers nicely giving great texture.
I had a partial skein of 4 mm ribbon which looks quite nice on the congress cloth. It lays a little flatter than the 5 mm ribbon. I think I will try to find a 4 mm for the restitch on 24 count.
As far as colours go - the choices are many! For my newly stitched pieces, I’ll more than likely stick to a neutral colour ribbon.
A caveat on my samples - I used what ribbon I had on hand which doesn’t quite match with the potpourri of colors that I stitched the sample blocks in!
