Revisiting My Grandma's Quilt - Block 3

Revisiting My Grandma's Quilt - Block 3

Block 3 on 18 count mono canvas

Block 3 proved a different outcome on thread weights. The perle 5 was way to thick and by the time I got near the end of stitching the first eyelet, I could barely get my needle through the center hole.

The perle 8 gave a much better result.

I also really liked the coverage and look of 3 strands of silk (I had some of the Gloriana silk that is called for in the pattern so used that). I was happy with the coverage of 3 strands, but 4 might be better. I will try a sample with 4 strands (and will make sure to pull the center hole so that the threads lay flat.

I’ve stitched another sample of block 3 on 18 count - this time with 4 strands of silk threads. This is a winner. I also dug out my stiletto and made a BIG hole in the center. That worked well!!  The thread strands lay nice and flat and the coverage is excellent!
Also featured are some new Caron Waterlilies skeins I picked up yesterday - there’s a high likelihood I’ll use one or two of these when I stitch the final versions!  This eyelet is stitched with Caron Waterlilies - 062 - Burnt Toast.

Block 3 on 24 count congress cloth
Considering that a lighter weight thread worked best on the mono canvas, I chose to start with 2 strands of silk on the congress cloth and I am calling it perfect. The coverage is great. I’ll make the center eyelet hole bigger so the threads lay better in the final version.

You could easily move to 3 strands on the 24 count and also possibly a perle 8 weight (Wildflowers).

For comparison, here is block 3 from the original stitched sample 2 threads on 28 count Jobelan.

I am enjoying working with different colours of stranded silk and some Caron Waterlilies with this block on congress cloth.
